Are there any cities in Australia, that are similar to the city of Austin in Texas, USA?

Loved Austin, a beautiful place full of art and music and culture. It was a good sized city, not to big and took about 20 minuets to get everywhere. Also It was easy to get around with all the buses and bicycle lanes. However, the people were rude and pretentious and I couldn't relate to anyone. The people kind of ruined it for me there, and it's usually very easy for me to make friends with anybody. I don't want to move into this huge metropolitan kind of city when I move to Australia, and since I don't know any one, can I please get a little advise?
