Your doctor is right. The thyroid doesn't cause respiratory infections. It could cause the feeling of a lump if significantly enlarged. The overwhelming majority of nodules are benign. You may have swollen tonsils or adenoids from repeated upper resp infections. If that's the case, you would probably have a lot of snoring at night. A CT scan of your neck could rule out or confirm these things.
