RCA small wonder camcorder?

It seems that if I buy brand new alkaline batteries, the camcorder will not turn on, but when I mix say maybe an energizer battery with a dollar general brand battery the camcorder might turn on, but only for a minute then the camcorder shows a low battery signal. What's wrong with it?
