How important is it for a baby to crawl?

I was just reading a research report on this...apparently ever since the "Back to Sleep" campaign for SIDS began, it has become increasingly common for babies to skip crawling and go straight to walking. They said the reason for this is simply because babies don't spend as much time on their tummies. I agree that it is completely fine for a baby to p the crawling stage and go straight to walking.
